What is this course about? This mini course is a basic primer on a type of pest control called genetic biocontrol, a collection of approaches that all exploit certain genetic effects and interactions to affect change in a specific targeted pest population. It focuses only on the science associated with genetic biocontrol, leaving issues related to risk, regulations, policy and public engagement for other courses.
Who should take this course? This course is designed for adults with limited science background in the areas of genetics and ‘pest control’ but with a need for or interest in becoming aware of options and opportunities now and in the future for dealing with pest problems that threaten public health, agriculture, and biodiversity conservation.
What will you learn in this course? You will learn
1) The meaning of biocontrol (or biological control) and the three common approaches,
2) The meaning of genetic biocontrol and how it fits into the biological control framework,
3) About five categories of genetic biocontrol,
4) That interest in genetic biocontrol began in the first half of the 20th century and technical advances in multiple domains have enabled its continued development and use.
